In the event you are involved in an accident that leads to your injury, there are certain things you must do to protect yourself later on.

Following an auto accident, make sure you keep these things in mind:

Don’t Give Statements

Whether written, recorded or oral, avoid giving any kind of statement to anyone concerning your accident or injuries.
Your first step should be to consult Kuzyk Law. We will advise you from there. Do not speak to your insurance company, the other party’s insurance company or the police—at least, not after the initial collision scene is cleared.

You may speak to the police at the scene of the accident, if you are able, just for the record, but do not engage in follow-up conversations until we are consulted.

Be Prompt When Submitting Claims

Rest assured, we can submit any and all claims to your insurance on your behalf. If you have no current representation, give us a call.

However, if you have to submit a claim before hiring an attorney for representation, follow all directions as laid out by your policy and put it in writing. Simply give the date of the accident if you must, as all claims must be submitted in an efficient manner.

More Helpful Tips

Accidents are serious, and should always be treated seriously.

DO NOT:

  • Talk to anyone other than us about your accident or case.
  • Put off seeing your doctor to get your injuries evaluated.
  • Neglect to tell your doctor any relevant information concerning the location and severity of your pain.
  • Ignore your doctor’s advice. Follow what he or she says to the letter.
  • Admit fault to anyone.
  • Offer any opinions as to the cause of the accident.
  • Make any false or incorrect statements about prior injuries to your doctor.

When being questioned by the police, insurance companies or doctors, it’s always best to say you do not remember when faced with details you can’t readily recall.

Do not try to fill in the blanks with information that is unclear. Giving in to pressure in the moment will only serve to haunt you later.
